I'm not sure what the answer is on how to feed the population while treating animals humanely but I know it's only right that we are talking and debating it. Another good article, I have added this site to my favourites.

Exactly my point!That was the reason I quit eating meat when I was a child.

@Ferox,
I am happy that you look into how slaughtering takes place.But,the sad thing is that not even 25% slaughtering follows the process you state.

@Site owner,
I really like this site.Don't you have feedburner feeds?I think a lot of people will like to subscribe to your feeds.

It depends on where you are.

Here, veal is any calf that is still fed on milk, many of them are 200kg+ calves that have simply not yet been weaned, still wandering aroundgrassy fields with their dam. Here, we don't castrate pigs at all.
And I've seen the slaughter process first hand. Even in halal slaughter of lamb the sheep do not struggle or cry before being stunned. I can eat the lamb happily because I know how it's raised and how it is slaughtered.
If it bothers you, look into it locally. It's not always as bad as some groups make out, and the technology advances all the time, especially in stunning techniques.
